Cultural Tourism

In Uganda we are endowed with different cultures. With over 56 tribes in the country,  travel to every region of the country is a new different culture and new experience which makes the cultural tourism product diverse.

There are specific destinations in Uganda that offer cultural experiences. The most popular being the Batwa tribe in the south West, the Ik and Karamojong  people in the Northeast, the Baganda in the Central, the Ankole long horned cattle in the West and the Bagisu in the East. Though Cultural tours are not that popular in the region compared to Wildlife tours, at Einewelt Safaris we strongly believe that Uganda has so much to offer. We combine hospitality, friendliness and give you the best cultural experience.

Cultural highlights include:

  • Batwa trail in Mgahinga National Park

This involves visiting the Batwa tribe who are pygmies living in Mgahinga. Previously living in Bwindi but were evicted to leave room for the Mountain gorillas. On this trail, the Batwa lead you into the forest and here you experience several ways of how they live. One can learn their ancient  hunting skills and their way of life and also know why it’s been difficult for them to adapt to life beyond the forest.

  • Ik people in Karamoja

These people live next to Kidepo National Park in the Morungule highlands and can be encountered while on a Safari to the a National Park. They are one of the smallest tribes in Uganda with over  13,000 people. They are a hunting and farming community with a very interesting way of life. Among the Ik, when a child is 4 the parents send them to their grandparents who later send them away at the age of 14. They also embrace wife inheritance. These people are less educated and less skilled but worth visiting on your trip to Uganda.

  • Home stays among the Baganda in the Central.

This cultural experience is unique to Einewelt Safaris. On your visit to Uganda, tourists are able to live amongst the Baganda people a  clan with a  very rich history. The Baganda people are sometimes referred to as the King’s Men. Tourists get to live in a chosen home, learn new cultural practices such as peeling matooke ( the staple food for the region), farm work, language lessons, cultural practices and their history for example why a woman keels down to greet and so many interesting practices.

  • Cultural dances from all regions.

This activity will allow you to visit different cultural centers to watch and learn the unique tribal dances of every culture. Key to note is that every tribe has more than one cultural dance and some are displayed on special occasions. They use specific drums for the dances and this makes the whole experience intriguing. Most popular include the Bakisimba dance from the Baganda, La raka raka from the Acholi, Kadodi dance from the Bagisu and so many more.
